What are these benefits for? Click on your company structure to find out.

My company already has a traditional group benefit plan.

If you already have a traditional benefit group plan, you submit to them first as a health spending account is not insurance but a fund of benefit credits available for health expenses beyond your normal coverage. In this case, the health spending account is for what portion your group plan did not cover, for deductibles and/or copayments. It also allows for a range of other health expenses that traditional group plans do not cover at all, but still qualify as medical expenses under the Canadian Income Tax Act.

National HealthClaim is my stand-alone benefits.

Excellent! You have been given a yearly amount of benefit credits that you can choose to spend on a whole variety of health and wellness expenses.

All our Health Spending Account (HSA) plans include coverage for:

All Drugs and medications prescribed by a licensed medical practitioner, dispensed by a pharmacist. Prescriptions must be on an official prescription receipt with the patient name, drug name, drug DIN identification number, prescribing doctor name, amount paid and date. Injection fees and insulin treatments (eg. insulin pump) are also eligible.

Over-the-counter items (ie. vitamins and naturopathic remedies are not eligible).

Any service performed by a qualified medical practitioner (as specified by the CRA or country if outside of Canada). Some examples include:

  • Chiropractor
  • Registered Massage Therapist
  • Allergist
  • Acupuncturist
  • Physiotherapist
  • Naturopath
  • Dietician
  • Podiatrist/Orthopedist (foot orthotics)
  • Social Worker

*If procedure is required as a result of a medical condition or considered “medically necessary” for mental wellness reasons, a  doctor’s note will be required for it’s consideration. Exception is Acne and Acne Scarring Treatment which is eligible in certain circumstances.

Enjoy coverage for all dental and orthodontic (braces/Invisalign) services for you and your dependents. The treatment must be performed by a licensed medical practitioner.

Please note teeth whitening (bleaching) materials (home kits) are not eligible as they are considered “cosmetic” and non essential. Teeth whitening services done by the dentist are only eligible with a doctor’s note confirming that the procedure is medically necessary.

Prescription vision wear including eye glasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses purchased in-store or on-line, including taxes and shipping costs are all covered. Clip-on sunglasses and non-prescription sunglasses are eligible when submitted with prescription eye glasses and contact lenses respectively. Services performed by an Ophthalmologist, Optometrist and Optician are also eligible. This includes eye exams, laser eye surgery and vision therapy.

Over-the-counter items (eg. contact solution and generic reading glasses) are not eligible.

*National HealthClaim is as diligent as possible in compiling and updating this list. However, National HealthClaim does not guarantee that this information is up to date. If there is a discrepancy between this list and the list of Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) eligible medical expenses, the CRA list will always take precedence.
